Nestling beside the River Tweed, historic Melrose with its 13th century Abbey is an excellent centre for enjoying the outstanding beauty and heritage of the Scottish Borders including Abbotsford, Floors Castle and romantic Traquair, strongly associated with Mary Queen of Scots . Melrose is also ideal for the enjoyment of golf, fishing, walking and cycling.
There is an annual Melrose Festival with a spectacular mounted ride-out in June, and a Pipe Band Championship in August.
Within easy reach are Edinburgh, Stirling and the Berwickshire coast.
